Consultants Report Imminent!
The long wait for the report from The Railway Consultancy will soon be over, with publication expected in the next two weeks. It promises to be a thorough examination of the case for re-establishing a passenger service on the line and opening a new station in Middlewich. The requirements will be listed and costed. The demand and revenue will be predicted using sophisticated mathematical models. Options of different service levels will be considered. The benefit-to-cost ratio will be calculated, and we are hoping the magical 1.5 figure is achieved so that we can take the project forward. Keep watching this space.

ATOC forgets Middlewich

On June 15th the Association of
Train Operating Companies (ATOC) published a report,
Connecting Communities, which considers 35 possible additions to the railway
network, linking towns in England currently without a station. Of these, 9 were
considered to have a viable benefit-to-cost ratio, and ATOC calls for these
schemes to be taken forward.
In the North West the list includes Fleetwood and
Rawtenstall, but Middlewich is not even mentioned. We are unclear why that is -
perhaps our population (13,000 and growing) is just too low.
ATOC have invited comments and suggestions on
their report. We expect that quite a few highlighting their omission will arrive
before the 31st July deadline.
It must be remembered that ATOC has no budget to invest in these schemes, though
its members stand to make money by operating trains on any of the schemes do
open.
